A planned flood of the Grand Canyon is about to happen
The Glen Canyon Dam at the Grand Canyon is there to prevent flooding, which it has been doing. Federal water managers will be releasing massive amounts of water down the river and through the canyon.
This flooding is expected to radically transform the Grand Canyon below the Dam. It will create massive waves that will redistribute sediment, move sand around and make the stream a better breeding ground for the Chub fish, a 3 million-year-old fish species.
The project is not without its' critics, especially considering the cost and its' narrow scope.
This is the third time in 40 years that man-made floods have been done in the Grand Canyon.
