Abe Karpen chooses faith over fame
Abe Karpen was poised to receive a measure of fame by starring in a movie with Natalie Portman. There was one big problem. Abe Karpen is a Hasidic Jew, and members of his sect were outraged that he would participate in a motion picture.
"Rabbis didn't like the idea of a Hasidic guy playing in Hollywood," said Karpen.
Karpen is 25 years old and is a cabinet salesman in Brooklyn. He was scheduled to play Portman's husband in "New York I Love You."
Karpen had already filmed a scene with Portman when a Rabbi raised an objection to his appearance in the film.
"This is when I woke up and saw that I made a big mistake," Karpen said. "My community, where I live, means everything to me."
