John Tyler Hammons elected Mayor of Muskogee at age 19
John Tyler Hammons is 19 and a freshman at the University of Oklahoma, but unlike many of his peers, he has a keen interest in civil service. His diligence has paid off as he was elected Mayor of Muskogee, Oklahoma with 70% of the popular vote.
"The public placing their trust in me is the greatest, humbling and most awesome experience I've ever had in my life," said Hammons.
John Tyler Hammons will be sworn in as Mayor next week. He said it doesn't change his plans for getting an education.
"Being elected does not change my desire to continue my education," he said. "We will schedule our time in an appropriate fashion so that I can be mayor and stay in school."
