The Howard Hughes Medical Institute sets up a $600 million research fund

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute is already the country's largest supporter of biomedical research, so it's new commitment to the cause doesn't come as a complete suprise.

"We think that kind of scientific daring is essential for long-term success. We've found over time that it really takes a while to translate discoveries into new therapies for people," said Avice Meehan, vice president for communications and public affairs at the institute.

The Howard Hughes Medical Center was established in 1953 by Howard Hughes, the millionaire industrialist, movie pioneer, and aviator.

42 men and 14 women have been picked to do research as part of the new initiative. They'll maintain their current jobs, but will contribute research to several areas the Institute is interested in. The Howard Hughes Medical Institute has a total endowment of $18.7 billion.
