Chevy Volt
Chevrolet Volt Approved For Production
Chevrolet announced today that they will start production on the Chevy Volt. The Chevrolet Volt operates on lithium-ion batteries as opposed to primarily unleaded gasoline.
The Chevy Volt is a kinder, gentler car that doesn't require large amounts of fossil fuel and has much lower emissions than other cars and trucks. Apparently the auto industry is finally starting to seriously look into greener ways of fueling our way of life.
General Motors, parent company of Chevrolet said that they are mulling the future of the gas guzzling Hummer and closing four North American manufacturing plants. The affected plants are
- Oshawa, Ontario Currently produces the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra will likely cease production in 2009.
- Moraine, Ohio Currently produces Chevy TrailBlazer, GMC Envoy, Saab 9-7x likely to end production at the end of the 2010 model year, or sooner if the market demands.
- Janesville, Wisconsin Currently produces the Chevy Tahoe, Chevy Suburban, GMC Yukon. Will halt production in 2010, and stop building its medium-duty truck by the end of 2009.
- Toluca, Mexico Currently produces the Chevy Kodiak medium-duty truck will stop at the end of this year.
Cutting back on producing these huge vehicles and focusing on smaller, more fuel efficient and greener energy sources is the way of the future. We'll have to see if the Chevy Volt is all it's cracked up to be. The Volt would be built at GM's Hamtramck, Michigan, assembly plant in suburban Detroit. At the time of this writing, designs were being finalized and no photos are available.
