John McCain Versus Barack Obama

Mainstream media is touting the issues of "Age" and "Race"

Barack Obama and John McCain will duke it out for President of the United States, and the media is already casting their battle in a certain light.

One article, by Liz Sidoti of the AP summarizes the battle between the two candidates in the following manner:

Will McCain be able to overcome the country's intense desire for change by separating himself from the unpopular Bush while sticking close on issues of war and taxes?

Will Obama be able to overcome the country's unsavory history of slavery and lingering bigotry that deeply divides the public to be elected the first black president?

It's clear to see how the argument is being framed if those are the two key issues beleaguered American voters are most concerned with. Can Obama overcome the "country's unsavory history of slavery"? That's preposterous. Certainly there could be a mention of one of the actual political issues facing the President, and not merely inane commentary wondering if people can overcome their backgrounds as "slaveholders" long enough to vote for the skinny black guy from Illinois. Certainly slavery isn't that fresh in the minds of all American voters in the year 2008.

The candidates are actually marketing their battle in a different way. The single word "Change" is key to both McCain and Obama. Obama had the word displayed prominently on his podium as he gave his acceptance speech and McCain mentioned "change" 30 times in his speech. Both are seeking to capitalize on unhappy voters who are hoping the country goes in a different direction.

Hopefully in the next five months we'll see clarity on a number of important issues, and not only politicians and the media paying lip service to superficial rhetoric.
