iPhone India

Is the iPhone going to India?

News of the $199 iPhone 3G is sweeping the world. India doesn't currently have access to the Apple iPhone, but Bharti Artel, the largest mobile operator in the country is hoping that's about to change.

India's top mobile operator, Bharti Airtel (BRTI.BO: Quote, Profile, Research), will bring Apple Inc's (AAPL.O: Quote, Profile, Research) latest third-generation iPhone to India later this year, the firms said in a statement on Tuesday.

Earlier, Vodafone Group Plc (VOD.L: Quote, Profile, Research), which controls India's No. 3 mobile firm, Vodafone Essar, said it would launch iPhone 3G in certain countries including India later this year.

In May, Bharti said it had signed a deal with Apple to bring the iPhone to India this year.

Apple announced the new 3G iPhone will be available in 22 countries worldwide.
