Ethical Website Promotion Using The Social News Sphere
by Alan Henderson in internet

Social news websites are incredibily important to the success of many websites these
days. For this reason, the idea of "spamming" social websites in order to get traffic has
crossed many a shady webmaster's mind. But if you plan on doing business on the internet
for any extended period of time, you'll find out that you're much better off promoting your
website ethically.
Ethical promotions of websites through the social sphere can be hugely effective
I use the word "ethics" not in a strict sense, but rather in the sense of confining your
activities to fit within the norm of the social network you're visiting. Let's use an
obvious real world example. Say you visited a family re-union. You're sitting around
talking to relatives when suddenly a stranger butts into your conversation and begins trying
to sell you Viagra. Of course you'll end up reluctant to discuss the idea further with
him.
Well this type of socially inept contact happens every day on the internet. A person
will rudely attempt to market their products to the very people who could help them grow, if
there website was worth visiting in the first place. Slow down and take a deep breath.
Sure you want business, but you can't expect anyone to visit your website unless it adds
real value to the internet.
What are some signs your website content is not effective?
- If you run into a lot of resistance when promoting your website, it might point to a
greater issue that needs addressing
- Promoting your website through social news websites can not make up for a lack of
content or quality. It can only help websites that are in a position to grow.
Depending on your efforts, you can expect anything from a great reception to abject
horror when you submit your stories. If you find that most people absolutely hate your
writings, you're probably better served going back to the drawing board and refining your
skills rather than continuing with promotions. Promoting a bad product is much tougher work
that improving a product that is already selling. Either way, keep an eye on quality, and
use the social news sphere for what it's intended: to communicate with others about
important events. If you actually participate in a community, rather than just try and take
something out, you might find out that your efforts are well rewarded.
What can you expect out there in the field?
You can expect all kinds of reactions from ridicule through hatred to maybe even grudging admiration if you're lucky. And even more importantly, your article will be read by people who make a difference.
- Netscape - You can submit to Netscape, but generally only political content will do well
- Digg.com - The website is rumored to be run by paid to promote types, but strong evidence is inclusive. Diggers seem to love fringe tech stories best of all.
- Reddit.com - Reddit boasts a somewhat eclectic crew of readers. You can do well here with offbeat news.
You get what you give in the social news sphere
The most success comes to the webmaster who is willing to work at being a part of a community. This will be rare in most cases, but the ones who contribute the most tend to do well. Even if you don't plan on contributing much, you should still be extremely respectful of the eco-system that has built up over time at the community. You'll catch many more bees with honey.
What other tips can you think of for promoting your new stories?
