Barack Obama and John McCain Do Battle Over Terrorists

by Thomas Colbert in politics

This post has been tagged: Barack Obama

Barack Obama is not happy about John McCain calling him naive

Randy Scheunemann of the McCain campaign said that he felt Obama had a "September 10th" mindset concerning terrorism. This type of criticism has been leveled before. In essence, McCain's campaign is using a tactic that worked very well for Bush when he went against John Kerry in 2004.

Obama fired back yesterday.

"These are the same guys who helped to engineer the distraction of the war in Iraq at a time when we could've pinned down the people who actually committed 9/11," he said.

Obama recently appeared on ABC News and did mention going back to a "pre 9-11" type strategy in fighting terrorism that relied more on lawyering that on military action.

"And, you know, let's take the example of Guantanamo," Obama said at the time. "What we know is that, in previous terrorist attacks - for example, the first attack against the World Trade Center - we were able to arrest those responsible, put them on trial."

"And the fact that the administration has not tried to do that has created a situation where not only have we never actually put many of these folks on trial, but we have destroyed our credibility when it comes to rule of law all around the world."

We should expect terrorism to rise to the forefront of debate in the next months as the election progresses. The issue is a touchy one. McCain and Obama are just starting to differentiate and articulate their positions. McCain has also criticize Guantanamo Bay during his campaign. Right now, we have two candidates without much experience deciding on the direction that U.S. foreign policy will take in the next four years.
