LOS ANGELES, April 4 (UPI) --
Singers Rihanna and Chris Brown are spending time apart with family prior to Brown's scheduled Los Angeles court date on charges he beat her, sources say.
An unidentified source said Brown, 19, returned to his home state of Virginia to be with family and seek counseling in anticipation of his arraignment Monday in Los Angeles Superior Court, People.com reported Friday.
The "Run It!" singer took time during his visit to play basketball with some students at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Va., one of those students said.
"He seemed like he was in a pretty jovial mood. I think he was trying to relax. I think he's in Virginia to get away from it all," business administration senior Matthew Treacy said of Brown.
Meanwhile, Rihanna's father, Ronald Fenty, told People.com his daughter had returned to her native Barbados amid the celebrity scandal.
"She's home," Fenty said of his 21-year-old daughter. "She is in good spirits. And she sounds great."
Brown stands accused of assaulting Rihanna, his Grammy-winning girlfriend, Feb. 8 just before the Grammy Awards program at which she was to perform.
