Maggie Laughlin

Maggie Laughlin is accused of having a sexual relationship with a ninth grade student.

Maggie Laughlin, 23 and a former math teacher at Shore High School in Mentor, Ohio is accused of having a sexual relationship with a ninth grade student there. According to reports, Laughlin taught for less than a year at the school prior to resigning.

A student at the school reported the affair and school officials contacted police.

Of the incident Dr. Jacqueline Hoynes, superintendent of schools said "This crime is a devastating betrayal of the fundamental trust that parents put in their children's teachers every day. We are grateful that one of our students had the courage to tell a teacher about this situation. It is so important that students take the appropriate action when they have information like this, and we will continue to strive to create an environment in our schools where students can do so."

Laughlin appeared in court this morning and was charged with one count of sexual battery and one count of unlawful sexual contact with a minor. Bond was set at $100,000 on each count for a total of $200,000. Laughlin needs 10% to post bond.

School officials say they are going to work with authorities in any way possible and plan to file a teacher misconduct report on Laughlin with the Ohio Department of Education.
