Myrtle Beach Fire
MYRTLE BEACH, SC., Apr.23 (TOTI) --

Coastal fires in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina have destroyed and damaged a number of homes in the popular tourist town.

Officials alerted and evacuated hundreds of residents that were threatened by the blazes fueled by high winds overnight.

There were no reports of injuries or death as a result of the fires, but the area is still considered dangerous.

Forestry Commission commander Mike Bozzo said the fire is still burning intensely and appeared to be headed north.

Five local schools were canceled due to heavy smoke and the governor has declared a state of emergency for the county.

The cause of the fire hasn't been determined, but officials believe it started yesterday in a wooded area near the beach.
