MLB: San Diego 3, Pittsburgh 2

SAN DIEGO, Sept. 28 (UPI) --

Chris Young gave up a run and five hits in six innings Saturday, helping the San Diego Padres record a 3-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Kevin Kouzmanoff drove in two runs with a first-inning homer, his 23rd this season. Also in the first, Adrian Gonzalez hit an RBI double for the Padres, who had dropped three of their previous four games.

Young (7-6) did not walk a batter, fanned five, and threw 63 of his 97 pitches for strikes.

Closer Trevor Hoffman, the last of four San Diego pitchers, recorded his 30th save this season with a 1-2-3 ninth.

Pittsburgh scored on Adam LaRoche's third-inning double and Jason Michaels' eighth-inning triple. LaRoche was one of three players with two hits for the Pirates, who have lost five of six.

The losing pitcher was starter Jimmy Barthmaier (0-2).
