Eric Shanteau Has Cancer
Beijing Olympics qualifier Eric Shanteau has testicular cancer
A bit of bad news has befallen Eric Shanteau, who recently found out he has testicular cancer. The 24 year old swimmer learned of the problem just one week before successfully qualify for the Beijing Olympics.
"I was sort of like, 'This isn't real. There's no way this is happening to me right now,'" Shanteau told the Associated Press. "You're trying to get ready for the Olympics and you just get this huge bomb dropped on you."
Shanteau was told by doctors to have immediate surgery, but it would prevent him from swimming for two weeks. Shanteau has decided to skip the surgery until he returns to the States from Beijing.
According to Shanteau, doctors have told him he has a good chance of recovering from the cancer. He said it put a damper on his qualifying efforts, but he won't let it bother him during the Olympics.
