2008 Futures Game

by Lupe Lasano in sports

Young talent is constantly being scouted in the Major Leagues. If it wasn't, teams would go South in a hurry. If you can't add great young players to your roster, your team doesn't stand a chance of winning the world series. So what's an excellent way to showcase a number of young players with a ton of baseball talent at the same time? The 2008 Futures Game.

The 10th annual XM Satellite Radio All-Star Futures Game at Yankee Stadium will be unique in a few ways from past events. For one thing, it will be the first time the game is 9 innings, and not 7.

Playing in the Futures game is a big deal to youngsters, because it gives them the kind of exposure they need if they hope to succeed in the competitive world of baseball. This year the motivation is even more pronounced than usual. That's because outstanding players in this year's game will be invited to play for the USA in the Beijing Olympics.

The USA baseball squad that goes to the Olympics will be picked on July 16th, the day after this year's All Star Game. Expect many of today's future stars to be playing their asses off for the honor.

They have a good chance at making the Olympics, according to U.S. Manager Davy Johnson.

"Off the top of my head, I will say that probably half of them will make the squad," Johnson told reporters on Saturday. "But a lot of the decisions have already been made so they're not really auditioning here."
