New Yorker Obama Cover Draws Ire

A controversial New Yorker magazine cover picture draws criticism

The Barack Obama campaign is none too pleased about the new cover art on New Yorker Magazine. The picture depicts Obama in a turban and he's giving what is presumably a "terrorist fist bump" to his wife Michelle, who is toting a machine gun! That's not exactly the type of image that Obama is trying to present with voters, especially this close to a national election.

Fist-bumping Obamas draw ire of both parties

Obama campaign manager Bill Burton was swift with his condemnation.

"The New Yorker may think, as one of their staff explained to us, that their cover is a satirical lampoon of the caricature Sen. Obama's right-wing critics have tried to create. But most readers will see it as tasteless and offensive. And we agree."

This is one case where John McCain's campaign is in utter agreement. Campaign manager Tucker Bounds said, "We completely agree with the Obama campaign, it's tasteless and offensive."

The New Yorker says it's "satire" and stands by their decision to run the artwork. The edition is scheduled to run on July 21st.

"On the cover of the July 21, 2008, issue of The New Yorker, in 'The Politics of Fear,' artist Barry Blitt satirizes the use of scare tactics and misinformation in the presidential election to derail Barack Obama's campaign", the magazine writes as an explanation of the artwork.
