CANNES, France, May 29 (TOTI) --

The time for forced smiles and a display of public unity seems to be ending for Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Hollywood's most famous and enduring power couple. A cover story from In Touch takes a peek into what's been happening with Brangelina, and what they've found paints an unflattering portrait of America's most famous boyfriend and girlfriend.

On May 20 Pitt and Jolie were in Cannes for one of their many trips on a red carpet. Usually they're very composed in such situations. This time, they exchanged 'steely glances' and 'heated words' in front of many onlookers. This rare public outburst should help to strengthen claims that Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are nearing the breaking point in their relationship.

Sources close to Brangelina confirm that animosity has now bloomed where love once flowered so abundantly. The night in Cannes is a prime example.

"Brad was trying to ignore her, but Angie kept making nasty comments about how she didn't want to be there," said a source. "She was pushing his buttons as only she knows how."

Several pictures from the event seem to support this theory. Pitt and Jolie both look visibly irked. That didn't stop Pitt from forcing a smile when asked how he was enjoying himself at the film festival.

"It's good fun, man," Pitt, 45, said. "It's good fun to be here with Quentin and this lovely lady."

Even though Pitt and Jolie maintained their composure, witnesses to the event had an alternative view of how things went.

"Angelina looked so angry," said a source. "She seemed humiliated."

What's causing the tension? The text messaging that's transpired between Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston, of course. Not only that, but Brad seemed to pay more attention to his co-star Diane Kruger, then he did to life partner Angelina Jolie. This did not sit well with Jolie, who is famous for her portrayal of tough women in film.

It wasn't only Kruger who Pitt paid attention to at a swanky party in Cannes. He fawned over everyone, except Angelina Jolie!

Diane Kruger was very impressed with Pitt.

"I'm extremely excited," she said about appearing in Inglorious Basterds> with him. "He's great. I'm really happy about it."

Jolie didn't appear to share the joy.

"She hates when women swoon over him," a source said. "Everyone saw the tension and was making comments."

The two stayed at the party at La Baoli nightclub in Cannes until 10:30pm. When they left, the affects of their partying seemed obvious to all.

"After a couple of hours, both of them looked pretty sloppy and out of it," a guest said.

For now Brangelina remains together. But chinks in the armor are appearing. How long will it be before their private squabbling turns into all out war?
