LANSING, Mich., June 5 (UPI) --
Three prisons and five minimum security camps in Michigan are set to be closed in order to trim the state's budget, an official says.
Department of Corrections spokesman Russ Marlan said the prisons set to be closed in Michigan are the Standish Maximum Correctional Facility in Standish, the Muskegon Correctional Facility in Muskegon and the Hiawatha Correctional Facility in Kincheloe, The Detroit Free Press reported Friday.
The five Michigan security camps facing closure include Camp Cusino in Shingleton, Camp Kitwen in Painsdale, Camp Ottawa in Iron River, Camp Lehman in Grayling and Camp White Lake in White Lake Township.
Marlan said the estimated 1,600 prisoners at the camps will be transferred to various prisons in the state.
The 568 inmates currently incarcerated at Standish Maximum Correctional Facility will be relocated to other maximum security or Level Four prisons. The relocation details for Muskegon and Hiawatha prisoners were not reported.
The closures will take place sometime between Aug. 1 and November, the Free Press reported.
