Deeds wins Va. Democratic primary

RICHMOND, Va., June 9 (UPI) --

State Sen. R. Creigh Deeds won the Democratic nomination for governor of Virginia Tuesday and now faces Republican Bob McDonnell, election results showed.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reported that with about 70 percent of the primary election votes tabulated the Bath County lawmaker had 101,278 votes (50 percent) to 53,117 (26 percent) for former Democratic National Committee chairman Terry McAuliffe and 48,632 (24 percent) for former state Delegate Brian J. Moran.

The Deeds-McDonnell matchup for the general election in November will remind Virginians of 2005 when the two politicians went head-to-head for state attorney general, a razor-thin race McDonnell won by 360 votes -- the tightest outcome in state history.
