Stabbings at Catholic high school hurt 5

MISSISSAUGA, Ontario, June 18 (UPI) --

Two Canadian teenagers face attempted murder and weapons charges Thursday after four students and a teacher were stabbed at a high school west of Toronto.

Police were called to St. Joseph Secondary School in Mississauga Wednesday morning about a hallway fight that students said was retaliation for a beating incident Monday, the Toronto Star reported.

Peel Regional Police said none of the injuries were life-threatening, although one student was stabbed in the neck, abdomen and hand. Maria LoCicero, a teacher for students with disciplinary problems who tried to break up the fight was slashed on the hand and was treated at a hospital and released, the report said.

Students were writing exams at the time and the school was locked down as police officers scoured the building.

The suspects are 16 and 17, and can't be named.

Bruce Campbell, a spokesman for the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board, told the Star the school was safe and that the knife attacks weren't "a regular occurrence by any means."
