Serial killer has S.C. city on edge

GAFFNEY, S.C., July 4 (UPI) --

Police say they are confident the same person is responsible for five shootings in Gaffney, S.C., that left four people dead and a community on edge.

Cherokee County Sheriff Bill Blanton said police have a sketch of the at-large individual suspected of killing four people and seriously wounding a teenager during a five-day period this week, WYFF-TV, Greenville, reported Friday.

"Without a doubt, we are confident that the same subject is involved in all the shootings," Blanton said as the sketch based on a witness account was released.

The most recent attack by the serial killer took place Thursday night and left local resident Stephen Tyler dead and his teenage daughter Abby seriously wounded.

Residents of Gaffney said Tyler's family is a well-known part of the South Carolina city's community.

"They are just as nice as they can be -- the kids and all. It is just unreal," Jane Whisnant, who owns the Country General Grill in Gaffney, told WYFF.

"My thoughts and prayer just go out to their family right now," said Gaffney resident Tim Phillips, whose city has seen an increased police presence since the attacks began. "That's all that we can really do."
