Former D.C. mayor Barry arrested

WASHINGTON, July 5 (UPI) --

Washington City Council Member Marion Barry has been arrested after being accused of stalking, U.S. Park Police say.

A Park Police news release said a female resident informed an officer near Anacostia Park in Washington Saturday night that a man in a car was stalking her, and Barry, 73, was arrested as a result, CNN reported.

The broadcaster said the former mayor was cited and later released. He was ordered to make a mandatory court appearance for the stalking allegation. CNN said no court date had been set.

Barry, while serving as Washington mayor in 1990, was videotaped smoking crack cocaine in a hotel room during a federal sting operation. But because of his long record of civic activism, he was re-elected in 1994 to a four-year mayoral term.

Barry staged another political comeback in 2004 when he won a seat on the council, CNN reported.
