In his speech he said he wasn't coming to German as a Presidential candidate, but instead as a citizen. Obama then related stories about his early life and parents. The speech happened in the early evening on a warm night, and Obama looked comfortable as the Germans cheered. Obama stressed that the relationship between the U.S. and German is a partnership. He also said that the people of Berlin kept the "flame of hope burning" during the dark days of the post World War II Soviet era in Berlin. After speaking about historical accomplishments of Berliners as it relates to Democracy, Obama attempted to make the point that the 21st Century has even more dangers than ever before.
