Iran delays spy trial of Bahias

TEHRAN, July 14 (UPI) --

Iranian officials said the trial seven Bahai prisoners accused of being Israeli spies has been postponed, the U.S. Bahai Office of External Affairs said.

No date has been given for resumption of the death penalty trial, CNN reported Tuesday. The proceeding was scheduled to have begun Saturday.

The Bahais have been held for more than a year without being formally charged or having access to legal council, Diane Alai, representative to the United Nations for the Bahai International Community, told CNN.

Alai said the men were represented by Nobel Peace Prize winner Shirin Ebadi and human rights lawyer Abdolfattah Soltani. However, Amnesty International reported Soltani was arrested in Iran June 16, days after the country's disputed presidential election, and his whereabouts remain unknown.

The Bahai faith is a religion that originated in 19th century Persia, but is not recognized by Iran, which considers practitioners as apostates and heretics, CNN reported.

Since the Islamic revolution in 1979, more than 200 Bahais have been executed in Iran, Alai said.
