SANAA, Yemen, July 14 (UPI) --
Six alleged al-Qaida terrorists received death sentences and 10 others have been jailed in Yemen, official media reported Tuesday.
The state-run Saba news agency said a Yemeni court imposed the sentences on alleged members of a terrorist ring known as the Tarim cell and prosecutors said the defendants belonged to the local wing of al-Qaida, CNN reported.
Saba said the group included four Syrians and a Saudi who had been convicted of bombing oil and military facilities and the U.S. and Italian embassies, as well as killing tourists and attacked a residential area where Westerners live. They were arrested in 2008.
CNN quoted the Yemeni news agency as saying the men shouted at the judge as the sentences were handed down, with one defendant reportedly threatening that al-Qaida would kill the magistrate.
