A Georgia toddler accidentally shot himself in the stomach after finding a gun while his mother was asleep, police said.

Marquita Taylor of Forest Park told police she was awakened by the gunshot around 11 p.m. Sunday, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. She said she found the 3-year-old in his room with blood all over his shirt.

The boy was in critical condition Monday at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston. He was transferred there from Southern Regional Medical Center.

The weapon was a 9-mm semiautomatic pistol, police said.

Lt. Rebecca Brown of the Clayton County Police said investigators did not expect to charge the boy's mother, the newspaper reported.
