MLB: N.Y. Yankees 2, Detroit 1

NEW YORK, July 18 (UPI) --

CC Sabathia held Detroit scoreless through seven innings Saturday, helping the New York Yankees edge the Tigers 2-1.

New York scored its runs on a solo homer by Alex Rodriguez and Melky Cabrera's infield RBI single in the seventh. The 18th homer by Rodriguez broke up a scoreless contest leading off the bottom of the seventh.

Derek Jeter had two of the seven hits for the Yankees, who have won two straight after a three-game losing streak.

Sabathia gave up five hits and three walks but managed to keep the Tigers off the scoreboard as he improved to 9-6. He had four strikeouts. Closer Mariano Rivera earned his 25th save with a 1-2-3 ninth.

Detroit's run scored on a solo homer by Marcus Thames in the eighth. He had two of the six hits for the Tigers, who have lost three of four.

Losing pitcher Justin Verlander (10-5) yielded two runs and seven hits in seven innings with one walk and six strikeouts.
