GASTONIA, N.C., July 18 (UPI) --
A paroled killer was charged Saturday with kidnapping a North Carolina man and his three children.
Jerry Douglas Case, 52, was arrested in South Carolina after a shootout with police, The Charlotte Observer reported. He was taken to a hospital with bullet wounds.
Members of the family, residents of Gastonia, told police they were kidnapped about 5:30 p.m. Friday. Twelve hours later, Case pulled into a gas station in Gaffney, S.C., and went into the convenience store.
The father took the chance to drive off and called 911 when he was near Blacksburg, 10 miles away.
Police went to the gas station, pursued Case into a nearby swamp and eventually caught him.
One police officer was shot in the leg.
The father and his three children were driven back to their home, where police interviewed them.
Case was sentenced to death in 1986, but the sentence was commuted to life in prison and he was paroled in 2008. He was awaiting trial on a drunken driving charge.
