Kidnapped soldier appears in video

KABUL, Afghanistan, July 19 (UPI) --

A U.S. solider kidnapped by the Taliban was forced to make a video appeal for the withdrawl of foreign troops from Afghanistan, military officials confirmed.

The soldier, who has not been publicly identified, was taken hostage June 30 in Paktika province in what is believed to be the first kidnapping of a U.S. soldier in Afghanistan since the war began in 2001.

The 28-minute video, which appeared on Internet sites this weekend, shows the soldier sitting on a floor with his head shaved and wearing a shalwar kameez, the traditional Afghan outfit, The Times of London reported Sunday.

"I have my girlfriend, who is hoping to marry. I have my grandma and grandpas. I have a very, very good family that I love back home in America," the soldier said.

Answering questions from a voice in the background, the soldier urges U.S. citizens to convince the government to withdraw from Afghanistan.

"Please, please bring us home so that we can go back to where we belong and not over here wasting our time and our lives," the soldier said.

The U.S. military condemned the video as illegal propaganda and said efforts are continuing to safely recover the hostage.
