COLUMBIA, S.C., July 22 (UPI) --
A state commission in South Carolina says 1,250 state residents who accidentally received two unemployment checks should return one of the payments.
Roosevelt Halley, executive director of the South Carolina Employment Security Commission, said the checks dated July 19 were accidentally duplicated due to a printer problem last weekend, The (Columbia, S.C.) State said Wednesday.
Halley said the error was discovered after a check register copy was reviewed. The commission official did not specify the financial total for the 1,250 additional checks.
"We print 135,000 to 140,000 checks a week," Halley said. "When you run the equipment that hard, you're going to have mistakes now and then."
Individuals who received two checks have received phone calls and letters from the commission detailing the printing error, the State reported.
Halley said any individual cashing both of the checks will be held liable for the funds from the second state payment.
