SACRAMENTO, Oct. 8 (UPI) --
California officials say they are reassessing their inspection procedures following the fatal weekend crash of a casino tour bus.
The Sacramento Bee reported Wednesday that a bus that crashed near Williams, Calif., after a trip to a rural casino, killing five passengers, apparently was not properly registered.
California Highway Patrol spokesman Robert Kays told the newspaper commanders were discussing ways to improve oversight to keep unregistered vehicles off the road.
"We are looking for ways we can catch these rogue buses," Kays said. "We have the same concerns the public has. We want people to be safe on our highways."
The Bee said an increasing number of small companies catering to the casino crowd has the CHP worried about an increase in the number of uninspected and potentially unsafe buses on the road.
There was no indication that Sunday's crash in Williams was the result of a mechanical failure.
