RENO, Nev., Aug. 6 (UPI) --
Rod Pampling, seeking his first PGA Tour win in three years, grabbed a one-shot lead Thursday in the opening round of the Legends Reno-Tahoe Open.
Pampling shot a 5-under 67 at the Montreux Golf and Country Club, opening a bid for his third career tour triumph. He last won at the Bay Hill Invitational in 2006.
He was eligible for the first two World Golf Championship events held this year, but did not earn a spot in this week's Bridgestone Invitational.
A shot back at 68 was a crowd of players that included Jonathan Kaye, Vaughn Taylor, Rich Barcelo, Marc Leishman, Steve Pate, Grant Waite and Spencer Levin.
Former PGA Championship winner Shaun Micheel shot a 69, as did Paul Azinger and Jonathan Byrd.
Charley Hoffman, who at No. 21 is the highest ranked player on the FedEx Cup points list participating in the tournament, shot an 80.
